    Fraudulent Email Contains SaskWater Logo

    November 10, 2016

SaskWater officials are calling attention today to a recently circulated spam email falsely bearing the SaskWater logo.

"The email should be deleted immediately," said Paul Mayson, Manager of IT Services for SaskWater, noting this message was not sent by SaskWater, and as with any fraudulent email, the source is not to be trusted.

It is not SaskWater's standard practice to email invoices to customers who have not requested them. SaskWater does not offer the option for customers to retrieve their invoices electronically, nor is there an online customer account system that would enable customers to access account information electronically.

"It is entirely likely that the enclosed file could contain a virus," Mayson cautioned.

In terms of identifying the bogus email, the subject line reads:  “SaskWater Invoice.”  The body of the email includes the instructions: “download your SaskWater invoice for last month.”

An attached zip file is provided and the text directs the recipients to “check the attached invoice often to avoid irregular charges.”

This file should be regarded as potentially harmful. Do not open the file and immediately delete the email from your inbox.

If any file is opened that appears to have an adverse effect on your computer, Mayson advised to immediately power off or unplug the system and contact your business’ IT department or an IT service provider.

Mayson explained that this spam campaign does not appear to specifically target SaskWater customers.  He added that SaskWater’s private customer information is protected and its use is subject to strict privacy guidelines.

SaskWater is Saskatchewan’s commercial Crown water utility, helping communities, First Nations and industry gain access to safe, reliable and sustainable water and wastewater services.
